Bullets033.gifSwartland to host SA Young Wine Show

The Santam Swartland Wine- & Olive Route will be the hosts of the 2013 South African Young Wine Show - presented annually by the South African National Wine Show Association (SANWSA).    This competition gives winemakers the opportunity to showcase their best wines of their current vintage.

The eight participating wine regions are Robertson, Worcester, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Oranje-Vaal, Olifants River, Swartland and Klein Karoo. Individual entries from outside these regions are also allowed. The show dates back to 1833 when the Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Society presented the first wine show in South Africa, making the SA Young Wine Show the oldest wine competition in South Africa.

The mission of the South African Young Wine Show is to judge the quality of wines that are still in their infancy, i.e. within the year of production – and have some way to go before they are finally blended and bottled. In this way, the industry can give recognition to the production capabilities of a wine cellar. Very few of these wines are for sale or in their final form at the time of being judged.

In addition to the 17 SA championship trophies, the impressive General Smuts Trophy – introduced in 1952 – for the overall SA Champion Young Wine, and the Pietman Hugo Trophy, for the cellar with the highest score for five best entries, are also at stake.

Entries are adjudicated by specialist panels of seven judges drawn from winemakers or wine experts with a formal qualification and specialist knowledge of specific wine styles. An eighth junior judge per panel has been introduced to train future judges. Their scores do not count.

The South African National Wine Show Association will be announcing the 2013 SA Champions during a luncheon in the Swartland to be held at Org de Rac Estate, on the banks of the Berg River, just outside Piketberg on Wednesday, 15 August 2013.

Each of the participating regions show case their top-scoring wines at regional young wine shows.   The Swartland regional Young Wine Show trophy winners will be announced two days ahead of the South African National Wine Show luncheon, Tuesday, 13 August 2013.

Mnr.

At the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Bangkok, with agent V&K Inter Group, Frans Maritz, Dominique Forey, Kitipong Decha-Umphai and Pieter Terblanche.
